Three Fine Artists

Janet Cardiff

The House of Books has No Windows (2008)

                          The Killing Machine (2007)

Though House of Books intrigued me, I wasn't going to look at Cardiff's work until I came across The Killing machine. Inspired by a political situation at the time and America's stand on capital punishment, the atmosphere of the installation is incredibly chilling to me. From the use of blue light and the use of shadows I think that the piece would be quite disturbing and, well, creepy to see. It looks very empty and quiet, which- combined with the absence of a 'patient' in the chair- gives the impression that it's you sat in the chair and the helpless loneliness you would feel if you were stuck there.

Susan Hiller
Witness (2000)

This struck me as being very beautiful, and I could imagine it would be very moving to see. I discovered that each disc is a sound system, all holding recordings of people discussing other worldly experiences.
"The stories are examples of contempory visionary experience. Only today people see UFOs where they once saw angels."

Annette Messager
My Vows

(Any excuse to look at Annette Messager's work)
I love this piece, my final piece for the Relationships A level project was based on it. Made up of black and white photos, the combination of black netting and a simple heart form ballance dark with sweet quite nicely.
